  Trying to get to know people on the JWD

  i havent been here that long, and just trying to get to know a little more about the people im chatting with.

  i know some dont want to share too much info, which i understand.

  so.............im divorced, have 3 kids, lived in florida for 15 years, now back home in wi.

  Married? No. I was engaged to the woman of my dreams but I must not have been the man of her dreams. She gave back the diamond engagement ring on the last day available to get a refund from the jewelry store. She wasn't totaly heartless.

  Single? Yes.

  Gay? No. I love women. Tall, short, skinny, heavy, Blondes, Brunettes, Redheads they all make my heart go pitter pat. So why am I single? I work six and seven days a week so meeting women is difficult.

  Kids? No. I would like to have kids. If Tony Randall and Strom Thurman can become fathers in their seventies I have plenty of time.

  whats in your personal bible or religious library?

  let's see what i have... cambridge kjv (really nice, calfskin leather), cambridge reb (really nice, not as good as kjv though), 50 year old douay rheims (with annoying jw notes and written-in textual changes inside, courtesy jw great-grandmother), rsv-ce (imitation leather, looks extremely cheap), nab (imitation leather, looks better but sucky confraternity notes in it).

  that's my bible collection (i got rid of the nwt).

  The ones that I have are the Aiden Steinsaltz translations I got them and most of my books on Judaism from the Jewish Book Club.
  

  The Talmud is a work like no other. It is like you just walked into the middle of a discussion. At first glance it looks as if there is no rhyme or reason. A central text is surrounded by a commentary, that commentary has a commentary and that commentary has a commentary. You can read just the central text or pick one of the commentaries to follow.

Commentaries up the wazoo.

  Selfishness is a virtue and self sacrifice is a vice.

  Adam Smith over two hundred years ago said that it was not due to the benevelance of the butcher or baker that we are fed, it is due to people pursuing their own self interest that others benefit.

  There is nothing inately worthless in human beings. That is the great evil of concepts such as original sin. It takes normal human wants and desires then causes great emotional pain as people try to surpress and deny these normal wants and desires.

  If I lived in the 1st Century I would have been an adherent of Aristotlean Greek Philosophy. Celebrating the human mind, the human body and human achievement as the highest ideal. I would have strongly opposed the superstition called Christianity.
  

  Today in the 21st Century I live my life in a way I think would be approved of by the great philosopher Aristotle.

  There is nothing in the universe higher than the human mind and nothing greater than human achievement.

  When I was a Witness I thought the unpardonable sin would be knowing you are misleading people from the truth and doing it anyway.

  My defintion today is exactly the same. The Watchtower is guilty of committing the unpardonable sin.

  would you have turned in your own family member to the elders?..........just how far would you have gone in showing allegiance to the cult?

  I would have died for the WBTS. I thought they were God's channel of truth. I would have gone to my death with no fear and sure of resurrection in the paradise Earth.

  To do anything less would have been unfaithfulness to Jehovah.

  Now I would do anything I can to expose the WBTS as the lying scumbag it is.

  Hello FDS:

  After I realized that the Watchtower was run by scoundrels I associated with a group of Bible Students in Fort Worth, Texas for about two or three years. These folks do think that Russell was the FDS. He would say it was a "class" wink wink, nod nod, but everyone during his lifetime including himself thought it was he.

  I did not accept the Pyramid, or the chronology, or ANY dates but was very impressed with their faith. I disagreed with them you was not shunned or marked. I bet that many Witnesses would be much happier as Bible Students if they only knew they are still around.

  What is Paganism?

  i personally think it's a pantry that pretty much every non-christian belief system gets tossed into.

  there are so many perceptions of paganism, and although i pretty much want to open this discussion to those who label themselves as such, anyone's thoughts are welcome.

  this topic can become a can of worms, hopefully it won't denigrate to that.. thoughts?.

  The word "Pagan" comes from the Latin word meaning "countryside." The country bumpkins were not as sophisticated as the urban dwellers.

  Today it is mainly applied to polytheistic religions. Jews, Christians and Muslims are all monotheists and are not Pagans.

  I am an Atheist but I do refer to myself as a Pagan to emphasize that I am outside of the religious mainstream.

  Those who know I am no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses ask if I celebrate Christmas now. I tell them I celebrate the Winter Solstice, the Pagan holiday Christmas is based on.
